Moving to L.A.

Moving from Boston to LA during a pandemic is no small feat. I should know I attempted it three times before actually making the leap. I basically lived out of boxes for months but live and learn, it was my own version of ‘it’ll only be two weeks’.

Now as someone who grew up in England I would be remiss to start this without talking about the weather. It was hot. Perhaps made worse by spending most of my time growing up in either grey-skied England or forging my way through Boston Winters. Nonetheless, moving in July in one of the hottest summers to date would not be my personal recommendation.

Now I don’t mean to harsh the vibe of moving to L.A. there have been a lot of great experiences and I have not regretted the decision. However, one thing to be wary of, with which is true to anyone who moves, is the isolation. Maybe this was partially my fault by moving in a pandemic into heat so bad I could barely walk down the block. Timing isn’t my strong suit. The most useful and, in my opinion, practical advice I can give is first get to know your neighborhood.

Before I had even finished un-packing I walked a mile in every direction from my apartment. Getting familiar with the lay of the land is a great way of feeling more comfortable with your surroundings. Next you should try a few well rated take out places around you. There is nothing better than having a go to place for comfort food. Mine very quickly became ‘Main Chick Hot Chicken’ in down town Pasadena. I also recommend looking up local places where you can both do what you know you love, chilling in a cafe, as well as expand your horizons. I now know I in fact do not have a secret talent for ice skating.

One thing I wanted to do and could be great for you was try local clubs and classes. However, I don’t have the funds to dip my toes into taekwando. That being said, I was open to discovering the marvelous world of online communities. I joined a few discord groups and it was a great way to not only meet new people who were interested in the same stuff that I was but also do on a students budget.

Overall, moving can be a scary and disorientating time for anyone and that’s ok. There will be moments of uncertainty but an important thing to remember is how capable you are. Take it as a chance to discover new things, develop new hobbies and meet new people.
